IELTS -Speaking

IELTS speaking assesses the candidate’s ability to communicate in English language. It involves speaking with in length as well as short and situational communication.

  • IELTS Speaking test is an oral face-to-face interview session between examiner and candidate. All Speaking test are recorded.
  • Duration of IELTS Speaking test is 10-14 minutes.
  • IELTS Speaking Test comprise of three parts:
  • Part 1- Introduction -
    In the first part of IELTS Speaking Test, examiner introduce himself/herself and ask inductor questions to candidate followed by questions related to familiar topics such as home, family, work, study and interests. It lasts for 4-5 minutes. Answers should also be short, to the point and complete (1-2 sentences). In general, there can 7-10 questions.
  • Part 2- Long Turn -
    The examiner gives a cue card (situation) to the candidate to speak on it for 2 minutes in length following the points given on the card. 1 minute is given to the candidate to prepare and think about the situation. Candidate is also provided with paper and pencil to write down any helping notes. After 2 minutes, candidate stops the candidate. This lasts in 3-4 minutes.
  • Part 3- Discussion –
    In this part of IELTS Speaking Test, examiner ask question related to topic either from cue card or some other general social context such as technology, environment etc. These answers should be long, descriptive and supported with relevant examples (3-4 sentences). These are generally 4-5 questions and lasts up to 4-5 minutes.

  • IELTS Speaking is evaluated as per the Speaking Band Description criteria.
